Instrument Meteorological Conditions Rating (IMC)
Key Info
The Instrument Meteorological Conditions Rating, IMC, provides additional training and privileges for flight in reduced visibility and instrument meteorological conditions within the limitations of the rating. The rating was previously shown on Part-FCL licences as the IR(R). Existing IR(R) privileges remain valid and the CAA will show the rating as IMC when the licence is next reissued.
The IMC rating is a UK national rating. It may not be used in another country's airspace unless that country's aviation authority has given permission. It cannot be added to a LAPL(A).
Applicants must hold a valid UK-issued FRTOL and must have completed 25 hours of total aeroplane experience following the issue of a PPL or NPPL with SEP privileges. This must include 10 hours as pilot in command, of which five hours are cross-country.
The course includes at least 15 hours of dual instrument flight instruction, theoretical knowledge training and examination, and an IMC skill test with a UK-approved examiner.
The IMC rating is valid for 25 months after the last day of the month in which the test was passed.
