The Private Pilot Licence

The UK Part-FCL Private Pilot Licence for Aeroplanes, PPL(A), allows the holder to act as pilot in command in non-commercial operations within the privileges of the licence and the ratings held. It is an ICAO-compliant licence; use outside the UK remains subject to the requirements of the country concerned and the registration of the aircraft.
The course comprises at least 40 hours of flight instruction, including at least 10 hours of supervised solo flight time and at least five hours of solo cross-country flight time. This includes one solo cross-country flight of at least 270 km (150 nautical miles), with full-stop landings at two aerodromes different from the departure aerodrome.
Students must complete and pass nine theoretical knowledge examinations: Air Law, Human Performance, Meteorology, Communications, Navigation, Principles of Flight, Operational Procedures, Flight Performance and Planning, and Aircraft General Knowledge. The pass mark is 75%.
At the end of training, the student must pass a PPL(A) skill test with an authorised examiner. The minimum age for licence issue is 17 and the applicant must hold a valid Part-MED Class 2 medical certificate.
